Evaluate my English

Are you facing problems in your spoken English? A problem that people face when learning English is that they are not always given the opportunity to speak English to a native speaker. We focus here at WorldEnglishClub.com on listening to English; and no doubt you have been doing that. Speaking English can be a whole other problem in and of itself.

This is why we have created this page here at WorldEnglishClub.com for you. We will post your videos or audio, give you advice, critique your spoken English, and rate your spoken English so you know where you stand.

Many of you have never been to an English speaking country, but we know that everyone who learns english as a second language would like to visit sometime and really test your English speaking skills. Let’s get that test out of the way before you actually visit so you can be prepared as possible. Here are some speakers and their videos. Our comments will be below each video. Feel free to comment on others videos as well. Maybe some advice that you learned while facing the same issues.

My Critique: Your spoken english is actually quite good. To improve your English is almost not an issue for you anymore. I think that you are articulating your thoughts well (which is a big challenge) and that you rarely stumble on words; however, I noticed that even when you do, you are actually deciding which word to use, both of which are correct.

On one occasion, you use the present tense instead of present prefect tense when you are talking about Santa Claus. You say “I’ve never say hello to him”. I believe that you knew your mistake, or possibly recognized that you might have made a mistake. So I’ll simply suggest to keep an eye out for those little things as you are speaking English.

It sounds like you have worked on your accent. Although it is noticeable, it is not overpowering your spoken English, therefore I say congrats on that.

Things you can work on: Although it is hard to gain an idea of what you really know in terms of vocabulary and colloquialisms (Americanisms), there are a few things I noticed. When you are describing the date of your favorite singer’s passing away, you say “2000 and 1″. I would suggest cutting out the “and”, and simply leave it at “two thousand one”. There is actually a correct way to say numbers. For example: 54,265 is spoken as “fifty four thousand, two hundred sixty five”. The word “and” is used when making a mathematical equation and it means “to add”. As in: 25 AND 25 IS 50.

As I mentioned before, just be aware of your tenses as you are speaking english.

My (opinion) Score: Great Job! – I think you have done a great job in learning English and your spoken English is great. I know that you should not quit learning even though you are at very proficient level. Keep studying and never stop practicing.

My Critique: I notice your enunciation is good. Your pronunciation is good on some words, yet other words seem to be a challenge for you. I think your vocabulary is very good and you seem to have a firm grasp on your thinking in English, and can articulate your ideas (which can be a hard step to overcome). There are some things you can work on though.

Things you can work on: As I said before, your enunciation is good; however, you need to focus on the pronunciation of some words. As with the word “any”, you tend to leave off the “ee” sound at the end. It is the same with the word “technology”. It sounds like you are rushing through the word. You have the same problem with the word “very”. Since this has happened with more than one or two words, this is a problem that you should be able to recognize when you come across other words ending in “Y”. While reading, take your time to read and pronounce the word completely. There are other words that sound like they were rushed through.

Although you may hear native English speakers speaking very fast, you should not attempt to speak any faster until your pronunciation improves. I suggest to listen to our Daily English Conversation Lessons, and try to repeat the words as exact as you can. This should be an exercise for you because I think you are above the level of those lessons. There are many lessons, so just lsiten and repeat. Listen and repeat.

My (opinion) Score: Good Job! – Your spoken English is definitely capable of a natural English conversation, wthough you do need work on pronunciation. Your vocabulary is good and your thought articulation is impressive as well. I don’t think it will take you long to receive higher marks because you seem very intelligent and are focused on learning English. Keep studying and never stop practicing.
