This is a great question kusum. There are many challenges faced with these two words which are known as "modal auxiliaries" or "helping verbs".

I would like to help you out and answer this question in great detail (and make it easy for you), but first I think I need to know what,if any, problems you actually have with these two words. Do you need to know when to use them or when not to? The straightforward answer to your question is a long a difficult one.

Take a look at this (which might be a little to complex of an answer) http://grammar.ccc.commnet.edu/grammar/auxiliary.htm#can
and then you can let me know more precisely what your question pertains to.

"Can" is used when asking or giving permission for someone to do something. "Can you hold my bag for me?" It focuses on ability for something to be done.

"Could" is very similar to "can" and can be used in most cases but it has a slightly different meaning or sense to it. “Could” refers to something that is not always possible. For instance, If you ask someone "Can I borrow $20USD?" You are focusing on their ability to lend you the money. If you replace can for could and ask "Could you loan me $20USD?" It makes us think or feel like it is less likely to happen.

But there is a lot more to it than this. Let me know what you think kusum :-)

Well Ames, the best way to describe it is basically like speaking in past tense but using an auxilary verb (found on Wikipedia).

So in an example: John is nervous about his test, but he has prepared.

So by combining a past participle with an auxilary verb, we come to a present perfect tense.

Ah ok. Dinner party. Well a "dinner party" (or the phrase at least) is more for friends but considered a bit formal. Usually a nice dinner is prepared and people will visit but the "get together" is focused more on the dinner. Meaning that people come together and eat and visit while they are at the table.

Sometimes this can be with co-workers. Although in my honest opinion, I think "dinner parties" are more out of style than they used to be.

A popular style of party (and this can be for co-workers or friends) is a weekend afternoon BBQ where things are cooked on the grill like steaks, hamburgers or something like that.

People might often drink at these parties but more for the social aspect. Not as if they were in a bar getting drunk.

And then there is the co-worker party (or get together for co-workers only) which is usually at a bar or restaurant or some type of social place. And is often after work on maybe a Thursday or Friday.

The reason why I asked if it was a party with friends or co-workers is the fact that the subjects are quite different.

For instance, at a strictly co-worker party, the people will often be talking about work (it is also referred to as "talking shop" as in "talking about the shop or business") and so the subject of vacation would be more likely to come up in a conversation.

However, in a strictly social engagement, that topic would most likely never come up.

I guess you can look at it as when you have a bunch of people together, they will most likely be talking about something that might be a common topic with almost everyone else present.

Oh, very interesting. I've always thought that the vacation in US is longer, even in the first year of work.

I've met (or "I met"?) the phrase "dinner party". What kind of party is this? I suppose is a party with co-workers.
Between friens, my impression is that the relations are not so formal, and people discuss more freely.

Well, in the States, we call a holiday a "Vacation".

And yea, they are not talked about much. Mostly because people are either too busy to take one, or most jobs will not give you vacation until you have worked with the company for a year. On top of that, they only give you five days of "vacation" for that whole next year.

And every year you only get five days of vacation. Sometimes companies will give you double that amount after you have worked for a certain amount of years. But the average is about five years before you get more than five days a year.

As to your other question, I'm not too sure what you mean. What type of party? A party with friends or a party with co-workers?

The answer changes quite a bit in different kinds of parties.

I know that it is hard to "find" time. Here are some ideas to help you out:

1. Read just before you go to sleep.

2. Read when you use the comfort room or the toilet.

3. Read while you are eating.

4. If you work, read during a work-break.

I think these are your best chances to get some reading in. If you are trying to learn vocabulary words like on http://www.worldenglishclub.com/grammar/english-vocabulary-list , then you could make what we call "Flash Cards".

Flash cards are easy to make. Get some index cards (index cards are a little stronger than paper) or paper that are about 7.62cm X 12.6cm. Write the word on front, and write the definition on back.

Using the flash cards, look at one, then look at its definition. Then look at the next one and its definition. After you look at the second card, pick up the first card and try to remember its definition. Keep doing that process when you have time.

Look at the 3rd card, then try to remember the 2nd, then look at the 4th, and try to remember the 3rd.

Please let me know if you understand this Ali or if you need more help :-)

Actually yewhoong, you would want it to read "The minimum amount is $6,000.00 and must be CERTIFIED BY THE BANK, stamped with THE manager's full name."

You want to use the word certified in the past tense because of the nature of the sentence. The sentence is actually in future tense even though the majority of the words are used in past tense form. This is because of the words "must be". When you use past tense for the word stamped, everything else should be in the same tense.

To make it present tense, you could say it like this "The minimum amount is $6,000.00, it is certified by the bank, and stamped with the manager's full name."

As you can see, to make this sentence into a present tense, I needed to re-arrange the entire sentence.

let me know if this makes sense to you or if you have any other questions, let me know okay? :-)

Hi Kashish,

I apologize for taking so long to respond to your thread. I have been having internet issues. Here are some things I found that will help explain present tense, which I believe is the easiest to start learning before moving to past and future tenses.

Present Tense
The present tense is the form of the verb that may be used to express action at the present, a state of being, an occurrence in the (very) near future, or an action that occurred in the past and continues up to the present.

Example:
I am the son of the principal.
Sheena walks home from school.
You are the love of my life.

Now in the explanation above, it is important to pay attention to the part that says " the form of the verb that may be used to express action". Present tense is almost always used in verb form. You may add an "S" to the end of the word. However, using the verb in its simple form will most likely be the present tense needed to get your point across.

I hope this helps kashish :-)

"The past doesn't equal the future."

This is a famous quote from Tony Robbins.

I want to know what this means to everyone here and also how you translate it.

What do you think Tony Robbins is trying to say here?

I'm sorry about that 14ahmed41.

I have been needing to fix that issue for quite a while. I am intending to record audio for all of http://www.WorldEnglishClub.com, even the articles. And I have also made a section for short stories and poems that will be read aloud.

I am not able to record at the moment because of computer related issues. But here are the pages that there is audio for:

Improve your English
Business English
English Idioms

All of these sections have audio if you navigate through the pages. I am still working on a new audio player. All the audio is in MP3 Format so they are all available to download.

I hope this answered your question =)

It took me having to read this quite a few times before I could see the difference. It is very minor but I think I can explain it.

The first sentence is "adding" the future tense after the word when.

But...the second sentence is future tense because of the word "when".

Does that make sense to you? It does to me haha

I'm sorry if I didn't explain it in a technical way. I have to interpret everything I see since I am not actually a teacher in the language but I am a hard core fanatic about it ;-)

I think what your lecturer was asking was: create a sentence in which these words can be described. Maybe using the same idea in each sentence.

Lets try...

1. I was wanting to ask a few questions about your work. (Inquiries)

2. Can you answer some questions I have about your work. (Request)

3. I have something to say about your work performance. (Complaint)

4. I need to talk to you about your work. (Problem)

5. I have an idea for your work. (Recommendation)

I hope that makes sense :)

......I could use some help from someone else in the forums here........

I would definitely have to say the second sentence, because of the conditional phrase 'even if'

However, I think it would be more natural to say it like this:

If we don't have lunch, would you still be interested in coming to my work?

I think it is more natural because lunch is clearly the subject of importance here. If I were asking my friend this question, I think that would be what was both on our minds...food. ha ha

I hope this answers your question well.

SmplHsl on "voices active and passive"

Once this is explained, it will be very clear to you.

In active voice, the person acting is obvious to the reader, "The soldier wrote the report yesterday." The person acting is the soldier.

In the passive voice, it is unclear as to who is doing the acting, "The report was written yesterday."

So you can see that it is very simple to change a sentence from passive to active and vice versa.

A good spot to see this and learn a little more is this page.

I hope this has answered your question =)

Hi there Singh007er,

I think your problem lies with putting in the word "in". I think it is confusing you into thinking that "like" could fit here.

Like does not fit in any part of the sentences you have. Although if you were to change the sentence structure, we could put it in. Let me give you some examples.

We're going skiing this weekend, just like last weekend.
or
London, like New york, has too much traffic.
or
In 1995, like 1994, he made a fortune on his business.

If you see how I was able to change the sentences around, that will help you in being able to make the sentence say what you want it to say.

You just need to break down the sentence into section. For the sentence "In 1994 as in 1995 he made a great fortune in/on his business." I figured there were 4 parts
-he made a fortune
-(in) his business
-in 1995
-like 1994 (now I had to add the word like here, but that is to simply show us that we are comparing)

Now think about these sections as if the were on notecards that you could slide around on the table. How would you position them, and what words or punctuation you would you like to use to join them together.

I hope this helps you out :)

Hello
is it OK to use "like" instead of "as in" in the sentences?

- This weekend as in last weekend we are going to go skiing.
- There is too much traffic in London as in New York.
- In 1994 as in 1995 he made a great fortune in/on his business.
