Adverbs

Adverbs can tell you where, when, how, why and to what extent something happens.

Adverbs:

  • Modify (describe) a verb, adjective, or another adverb.
  • Most words that end in –ly are adverbs.
  • Not and n’t are always adverbs
  • Most adverbs modify verbs.
  • If the verb being modified is part of a verb phrase, the adjective modifies the whole phrase.

Example: My friends will be gone soon.

The adverb in this sentence is “soon”.

What is it modifying?

The adverb in this sentence modified the phrase “will be gone”.
