What is a Sentence?
A sentence is a word or group of words that has a complete meaning. It starts with a capital letter.
Example:
Jackie is my best friend.
A sentence is incomplete if there is no idea or thought at all.
Example:
My friend.
Our Leader.
With all my love.
His mother.
Different Kinds Of Sentences
1. Declarative sentence tells something about a person, thing, place or event. It ends with a period ( . )
Example:
The boy goes to school.
My mother bakes cookies.
Mount St. Helens shows signs of activity.
2. Interrogative sentence asks questions. It ends with a question mark ( ? )
Example:
Is your classmate absent?
Why are you crying?
Where are you going?
3. Imperative sentence. There are two kinds of imperative sentences.
a) Request – Uses the words please or kindly.
Example:
Please pass your papers to the front.
Kindly give me a hand with this.
b) Command – The tone of the sentence is like giving an order.
Example:
Do your homework now.
Will you two stop arguing?
4. Exclamatory sentence expresses strong feelings or emotions. It ends with an exclamation point ( ! ).
Example:
We’re here at last!
My goodness, she is beautiful!
Transforming Different Kinds of Sentences
A sentence can be changed into different sentences with minor adjustments. Our example sentence is this: Ann is a good student. (which is a declarative sentence)
1. Interrogative Sentence
Is Ann a good student?
2. Imperative Sentence
a) Request
Please be a good student, Ann.
b) Command
Be a good student, Ann.
3. Exclamatory Sentence
Yes! Ann is a good student!
By looking at the example sentences above, you can see how easy it is to change a sentence with just a little adjustment to say something completely different.
