When we pronounce a number that is written in standard form we begin with the number at the far left just like we do when we read words.
We will use 456,271,013 for our example.
Begin with the 4 and say; four. We add the place of hundred (since it is in the hundreds place value, see place value page.) then we continue with fifty six. Stop at the comma which tells you to add its period name, in this case it is millions. So, you would continue by saying; four hundred fifty six million. Move on to the next number and do the same…. two hundred seventy one. The comma tells you to say its period name which is thousand and then the next number is thirteen.
Putting it all together you say; four hundred fifty six million two hundred seventy one thousand thirteen.
The big thing to remember is NOT to say “and” in any of the name. For example four hundred and fifty six. “And” means something else in math . We will cover that more in decimals.
