Simple Sentences
A simple sentence has one complete thought and only one subject-verb connection.
1. Simple subject, simple predicate.
Example:
Gretchen goes to school.
Richard plays basketball.
2. Simple subject, compound predicate.
Example:
Linda went to the market and bought fruits.
Nelson turns on the radio and listens to the music.
3. Compound subject, simple predicate.
Example:
Father and mother stare at the baby.
The priest and the nuns pray together.
4. Compound subject, compound predicate.
Example:
Jake and T.J. run to the door and welcome their new friends.
Maria and Julie prepare the ingredients and bake a carrot cake.
Compound Sentences
A compound sentence consists of two or more simple sentences or independent clauses.
Example:
The rain pored heavily and it flooded the streets.
Complex Sentence
A complex sentence consists of an independent clause and two or more dependent clauses.
Example:
The doctor attends to the sick infant while a nurse helps him and an attendant waits for his instruction.
The policeman runs after the criminal while the crowd gives way to him and the old woman prays to get her money back.
Clauses
1. A dependent clause has a subject and predicate but do not express a complete thought.
Example:
the most popular movie idol
during the Japanese occupation
while she was crying
2. An independent clause consists of a subject and a predicate and has a complete thought. A sentence is an independent clause.
Example:
My favorite dish is Chicken and Rice.
Jessica was born on May 14th, 2008.

hey what about the compound complex..isn’t it one of those structures if i’m not mistaken.
I’m sorry…but I think what you’ve presented as complex sentences are examples of compound-complex sentences (where there are at least two independent clauses and at least one dependent clause). Please review. Thanks!
Please look at your definition once again…”A complex sentence consists of an independent clause and two or more dependent clauses.” and your example: “The policeman runs after the criminal while the crowd gives way to him and the old woman prays to get her money back.” where there are two independent clauses : The policeman runs after the criminal , and the other one is – the old woman prays to get her money back , then there is only one dependent clause – while the crowd gives way to him.

Thank you to all of you who have pointed this mistake. I do intend to fix this as soon as I can get some time and I also intend to elaborate more as I know these are fairly simple in explanation and teaching. Thanks again everyone!
